South Korean TV ratings first half 2018: Too many shocking figures

In less than a week, the first six months of 2018 will officially close. If you think that 2017 is a boring year for kimchi, then you should think again, because the first half of 2018 is worthy of being called real bored. We are referring to the rating status of KBS, MBC and SBS - the three largest public broadcasting stations in Korea.

2018 KBS, MBC and SBS TV ratings rankings are up to June 24th (excluding daily screenings).

In the first half of 2018, only 13 TV series of three major radio stations were rated 10%. Of these, up to eight films are airing at weekend times (movies that are usually rated higher than Monday to Friday). The top four spots were My Golden Life (45.1%), Shall We Live Together (31.8%), Money Flower (23.9%) and Man in the Kitchen (19, first%).

Weekly SBS's highest ratings were SBS's Return with 17.4%. Despite the controversy between actress Go Hyun Jung and SBS leading to the female lead being altered, the work is still well received by audiences. In the film, Black Knight (13.9%), The Miracle We Met (13.1%), Should We Kiss First? (12.5%) and Suits (10.7%). Even Jang Dong Gun and Park Hyung Sik's Suits, though their ratings exceeded 10%, were not considered too successful and even left a lot of disappointment over the expectations of the producers and fans.

The broadcasts of the three major radio stations this year are not very impressive.

Compared to the first half of 2017, the movies on the regular day of this year are far less. Defendant (28.3%); Whisper (20.3%); Chief Kim (18.4%); Saimdang, Light's Diary (16.3%) was the fourth most popular day of the week.

Not just shocking because it was too low for the weekend, many regular films of KBS, MBC and SBS this year also have low ratings catastrophic. Up to two films have bottomed ratings of 1%: The Great Seducer (1.5%) and Andante (1.6%) and 5% bottom hit 2%. Radio Romance (2.6%) by Kim So Hyun, I'm Not A Robot (2.4% for 2017 and 2.5% for 2018) by Yoo Seung Ho, Hold Me Tight (2.1%). Jumong Han Hye Jin's beautiful movie stars are hot but totally flop in their hometown. The number of films rated bottom 3 - 6% is not counted.

"The Great Seducer" is currently the 2018 lowest-grossing public movie and the second lowest in history, behind only Manhole in 2017.

In contrast to public broadcasting, Korean cable stations are experiencing the first half of 2018 rather than full-blown. The highest rated cable stations are Smart Prison Living with 11.195%. Along with Smart Prison Living, Misty, Live, My Mister, Kim My Secret, My Sweet Dreams, Lawrence Lawyer, Grand Prince and Miss Hammurabi are 2018 top-of-the-line films. has the highest rating in history of cable stations . In particular, Grand Prince has rewritten TV history Chosun with a rating of 5.627%.

In some time frames, the rating of cable movies is even higher than that of many public broadcasts. For example, in the fourth hour of the week, TVN's Kim Clan won the top spot with 7.687% for episode 6 on 21st June, higher than MBC's Come and Hug Me (4.9%) and The Undateables (4.5%).

Cable films are gaining much success in 2018.

In the list of the 8 most popular TV shows in the first half of 2018 just announced not long ago, cable stations also show the overwhelming when the top five films. Four of them even took the first four spots, respectively, My Sweet Sister, My Mister, Smart Prison Living and Misty.
